Jazz at Panton Hill
Panton Hill's impressive architecture

The picturesque 4 ha winery set on a steep hillside at Diamond Valley's Panton Hill that you get to by taking a 1.5 km unsealed road running alongside a forest creek. I know because I did it on my bike !

The winery consists of impressive four major and a couple of smallersandstone buildings established by Dutch-born La Trobe Geology lecturer, Teunis Kwak, and wife Dorothy, in the 1970s. The sandtone is from on-site or neighbours paddocks. The first vines were planted in 1977 with the Kwak's planting the bulk of the vines in 1987/88.

The rocky, dry slopes with little soil have produced tough vines that yield low crop levels. The Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc are grown at the estate. There is also a range of fortified wines from warmer regions - although in the hot vintage 2003 the estate Pinot became too sweet to use as a table wine and instead became a one off Pinot Port ! There is also Aromatica,a rich, warmly spiced Marsala-style X-mas pudding wine.
