The Kirby family are more well known for their association with movie advertising giant, Village Roadshow.

They established Yabby Lake in 1998 on northward facing slopes at Moorooduc in the north of the region. For our non-Australian readers the Yabby is an edible and clawed freshwater crustacean.

The main focus is on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but there is also some Pinot Gris, Shiraz and Merlot.

Past winemakers include Todd Dexter (former Stonier and now his own Dexter label) and Larry McKenna (New Zealand's Martinborough and Escarpment). Tom Carson (ex Yering Station) is now the chief winemaker.

The portfolio has recently expanded to include some super-premium single block releases of outstanding quality. Through a Chinese partner Yabby Lake has rather ambitiously opened cellar doors in five Chinese cities.
