2270 Portarlington Road, Bellarine, 3222

Cellar Door: Daily (11 - 4)

Ph:(03) 5259 3310

Peter and Lizette Kenny of Bellarine Estate established their 12 ha vineyard in 1995 on the black basalt hills of the Bellarine Peninsula, just off the main Geelong-Portarlington Road.

The main focus is on the Geelong area's strengths, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also they also grow Shiraz, Viognier, Riesling and Merlot and an unusual Sauvignon Blanc that tends to have a hint of banana (it tastes a lot better than it sounds). The Two Wives Shiraz in recent years is proving a hit with both punters (people's choice awards) and many wine judges although it is a bit oaky for my obviously out of kilter tastes. My favourite is the opulent barrel fermented OMK Viognier.

The consistently approachable food friendly wines were made by Robin Brockett at the nearby Scotchman's Hill. Since 2007 a small wine-making facility has been established and Anthony Brain has been appointed winemaker.

Julian's Restaurant is open for lunch 7 days a week and also for dinner on Friday and Saturday.

Bellarine Estate Julianís Merlot 2010

Purchased: Not ($28)

Drink: 2015

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2012, Bronze Medal at Federation Square Regional Showcase 2011, oaky but more varietal than the porty, drought affected Ďrum and raisení 2007 release, plump glazed cherry and dark plum with violet and fruitcake notes, creamy and charry cedar/cinnamon oak dominates the back half, chalky tannins (***1/2)

Bellarine Estate James Paddock Chardonnay 2010

Purchased: Not ($28)

Drink: 2016

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2011, fairly intense and fleshy white peach, honeydew melon and orange blossom, some malo and barrel ferment fills out the texture without pulling back the flavours, has plenty of leesy mealy complexity with balancing grapefruit acidity and almond-vanilla oak (****)

Bellarine Estate Philís Fetish Pinot Noir 2010

Purchased: Not ($32)

Drink: 2017

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2011, aromatic and silky cranberry, sour cherry and plum with brown spices, iris and musk notes, medium bodied with savoury meat and earth elements, fine tannins with roast coffee oak, this excellent vintage for Pinot Noir gives extra elegance and focus compared to the drought vintages (****)

Bellarine Estate Two Wives Shiraz 2010

Purchased: Not ($32)

Drink: 2015

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2011, lush, spicy but medium bodied palate showing cranberry and dark plum with cinnamon and clove notes, the rather overt roast coffee and warm spice oak creates a coffee milk-shake sort of finish, lingering chalky tannins, popular style but not mine (***1/2)

Bellarine Estate Shiraz Viognier 2010

Purchased: Not ($36)

Drink: 2014

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2011, the Viognier is mercifully kept below 4% given the lushness of the fruit, boysenberry and plum with some black forest cake notes, as with the straight Shiraz the creamy roast coffee/cinnamon/vanilla oak does much of the talking, slinky and silky tannins (***1/2)

Bellarine Estate OMK Viognier 2009

Purchased: Not ($27)

Drink: 2014

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2010, generous perfumed blossom nose, rich barrel fermented style showing dried pear and apricot with cinnamon and ginger notes, fairly good length and focus for the style, chalky phenolics and a touch of almond on the finish, will benefit from short-medium term cellaring (****)

Bellarine Estate Two Wines Shiraz 2009

Purchased: Not ($30)

Drink: 2016

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2010, pre-release tasting, creamy, supple and medium-full bodied blackberry and cranberry with liquorice and smoked meat notes, as usual is very oaky with rich sandalwood-cinnamon-roast coffee inputs but has a good tannin structure, not my style of Shiraz but will undoubtedly prove to be as popular with the punters and some wine judges as other recent vintages (***1/2)

Bellarine Estate OMK Viognier 2008

Purchased: Not

Drink: 2012

(GXY) Tasting: April 2010, barrel ferment in seasoned French oak to soften the phenolics, slightly confectionary, rich mandarin and passionfruit with honeysuckle and ginger notes with crisp and chalky lemon acids (***1/2)

Bellarine Estate Two Wives Shiraz 2008

Purchased: Not ($25)

Drink: 2012

(GXY) Tasting: April 2010, stewed plum and blueberry with anise and cinnamon notes, the palate is rather dominated by roast coffee-sandalwood oak despite only 20% new oak, tasted like a coffee milk-shake to me but it won the Peopleís Choice at the regionís Federation Square showcase so Iím in the minority on this (***)

Bellarine Estate Julianí s Merlot 2007

Purchased: Not ($28)

Drink: 2010

(GXY) Tasting: June 2009, rather unusual take on what to do with rather too ripe fruit, make it taste like like a rum raisen chocolate bar, porty, concentrated and raisened dark fruit and spicy fruitcake with lots of toasty coconut-chocolate oak, shameless but many will find it a guilty pleasure (***1/2)
