Simon Moten and Karen Abe's Sanctuary Hill Vineyard is located at Faraday. The 4 ha vineyard is named after the Koala Sanctuary that exists on Mt. Alexander above the vineyard.

The vineyard was planted in 1999 with the first fruit being picked in 2003. Simon's family established the Asher Vineyard in Geelong when he was 13.

 

After majoring in biochemistry he has worked and Lindemans and as a beer brewer. The high density plantings include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a little bit of Cabernet Franc. There are plans for a dessert style Semillon.

(GXY) Tasting: Mar 2008, fragrant and spicy nose, blackberry and redcurrant flavours, medium bodied, minty with a herbaceous feel although not green, firm tannins, discrete French and American oak, good length (***1/2)

Sanctuary Hill Savage Dog Cabernet 2004

(GXY) Tasting: Mar 2008, blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, blackcurrant and redcurrant with plenty of mint and menthol running through the palate, medium-full bodied with a fleshy, spicy mid-palate and fine tannins (***1/2)
