Islander Estate is an ambitious brand headed by Bordeaux-raised flying wine-maker, Jacques Lurton. After visiting the island in 1997 he returned in 2000 to try to realise the viticultural potential he saw for the region with varieties he had enjoyed working with around the world - Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Grenache, Viognier and Semillon.

With the help of Paxton an 11 ha close planted vineyard was established at Parndana alongside a 70 tonne winery with equipment such as open fermenters, large wooden vats and smaller barriques were shipped from France.

Jacques considers the friable soils to be quite similar to those of Fitou in Languedoc-Rousillon, Southern France and recognises the challenges of the large vintage variations on the island. The reds are sometimes held back for considerable delayed release to mellow the acid/tannin structure but recent releases are much softer/glycerolly.

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2013, third release, this time the blend is 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec, three years in large 600 litre oak vats and another two years in bottle before release, perfumed, leafy core of glazed blackcurrant and mulberry with violet, spice and mint notes, long, earthy and medium-full bodied palate, wrapped up in smoky cedary oak and lingering dusty tannins,  quite stylised with less emphasis on primary fruit in a positive Bordeaux sense, already showing plenty of secondary bottle age character but will cellar well for at least another decade (*****)

Drink: 2016

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2013, 78% Shiraz, 22% Grenache, partial carbonic maceration to lift the aromatics, fermented in 600 litre oak vats for 2 years, this has a powerful entry but the fruit becomes more demure and savoury on the mid-palate, fleshy medium-full bodied blackberry and dark plums with herbal roast meat, white pepper,  and rose petals, fairly oaky finish with lots of roast coffee and charry cedar and some acid grip, more Cote Du Rhone than Barossa in style (****1/2)

Drink: 2014

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2013, the 5% Viogner co-ferment with Shiraz is the French twist on the classic Australian red blend, mellow bottle aged- dark plums and cassis, satiny, viscous mid-palate in a medium bodied mode with hints of apricot,  menthol and gentle orange peel-edged acidity, dusty, rounded  tannins with roast coffee/caramel oak infusing the palate, now in peak drinking window so drink up (****)

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2013, fermented in the 600 litre oak vats for a year, creamy white peach and lemon with lanolin, lees and spice notes, appealing tingly texture, good length with crunchy lemon rind acidity and a whisper of  vanilla on the finish (****)
