(GXY) Notes from a GenXY wine reviewer

(G) Notes from GenXY's Tasting events (collective opinions)

Penfolds Cellar Reserve Woodbury Vineyard Eden Valley Traminer 2011

Purchased: Not ($35)

Drink: 2015

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2014, the historic name for Gewurztraminer, finally a vintage cold enough to see what Peter Gago and wine-making team could do with this cool climate variety, perfumed lychee, musk, apple, rose petals and exotic spices, moderately intense with a viscous but not over oily palate,  long chalky, dry finish, no bitterness in the phenolics, a pretty good job (****1/2)

Penfolds Cellar Reserve Woodbury Vineyard Eden Valley Traminer 2007

Purchased: Not ($35)

Drink: 2012

(GXY) Tasting: Oct 2009, good varietal expression showing perfumed and floral lychee, musk, apple, rose petals and spice with a rich glycerolly palate with a long bone-dry and chalky finish, not the greatest vintage but still is one of Australia’s best examples (****)

Penfolds Eden Valley Reserve Bin Riesling 2006

Purchased: Not ($24)

Drink: 2010

(GXY) Tasting: June 2007, quite restrained style as in the 2005 but with a taut structure, apple, pear and lime flavours, tangy fruit with tight chalky minerality, fresh citric acids on the finish, not as closed as the 2005 (***1/2)

Penfolds Eden Valley Reserve Bin Riesling 2005

Purchased: Not ($24)

Drink: 2006

(GXY) Tasting: October 2006, pale straw colour, restrained apple, lime and lemon flavours, focused minerally palate although lacking intensity of the region, natural acid, top quality whites are still a work in progress at Penfolds but are going in the right direction (***)
