Eden Vally giant, Yalumba (Samuel Smith & Sons) bought a 20 ha vineyard in 1993 off a former grape supplier and soon purchased another 16 ha vineyard in the Coonawarra and an 82 ha vineyard in the nearby Wrattonbully region.

The Menzies Wine Room is cellar door for Yalumba's Limestone Coast vineyards (including the Wrattonbully Smith and Hooper brand) and is made from rammed earth winery and includes a function complex.

The winemaker is Peter Gambetta.

(GXY) Tasting: Aug 2013, firmish, extracted medium bodied palate showing dry and glossy cassis, redcurrant and mulberry and rose petal notes, has the usual graphite minerality and persistent dusty and savoury tannins, charry spicy cedar-vanilla-clove oak and a dab of choc-mint on the finish, good line and length (****)

Drink: 2015

(GXY) Tasting: May 2011, this vintage shows good depth with the length that was missing from the 2008ís compressed palate, firm and dense blackcurrant and black cherry with violet and leaf notes, earthy and medium-full bodied with fine powdery savoury tannins, the French/US and Hungarian oak treatments bring spice/cedar/dark chocolate to the finish (***1/2)

(GXY) Tasting: Aug 2010, stylish and ripe blackberry, cranberry and violet, creamy with a savoury olive mid-palate and underlying graphite minerality, backbone of powdery savoury tannins, lightly charred spicy cedar-vanilla oak, a well balanced wine that is approachable now but will age gracefully, a fair effort from a rather difficult vintage (****)

(GXY) Tasting: Aug 2010, rather cooked and stressed cranberry and raisens with tobacco and leather notes, broad, forward and medium bodied with smoky cedar-vanilla oak and rather loose knit savoury tannins, a big drop in usual standard, presumably this is where the cooked fruit from the March 2008 extreme heatwave ended up (**1/2)

(GXY) Tasting: Aug 2009, a much awarded wine, silky cassis and mulberry with lots of brown and black spices and some violet and graphite notes, good depth and length, the medium-full bodied palate is infused with finely grained tannins and some firm acids, finishes with spicy and lightly charred oak (****1/2)
