Hollick wines from Wrattonbully region

label

Hollick is now one of the region's most substantial wineries still under family ownership.

Hollick wines are made from three core vineyards. The original Neilson's Block, planted by Dookie wine school-graduate Ian Hollick and his wife Wendy (a teacher who is now a passionate wine educator) in 1975.

The nearby Wilgha vineyard was purchased in 1987, and the Red Ridge vineyard developed in 1998 at Wrattonbully, giving Hollick over 200 acres of vineyard in total.

Eighty percent of the vineyards are planted with red varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot. The remaining balance of the vineyards is planted with the white varieties: Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Albarinoand Semillon.

A historic cottage, which was restored in 1983 is a feature of the entrance to the winery. The 1860s cottage is heritage listed, was the birthplace of lyric poet John Shaw Neilson and acted as Hollick'soriginal cellar door.

A modern million dollar cellar door and restaurant complex was opened in 2002.

David Norman, whose family ran the once huge Norman wine company, was the chief winemaker but it is now done by Ian Holilck and Matthew Caldersmith.

The super-premium is the Ravenswood Cabernet but I have also enjoyed the sparkling Merlot, Nectar sticky and the Reserve Chardonnay almost as much.
