Elderton Wines From Riverina region (NSW)

Elderton cellar door at Nurioopta

While the cellar door was set up in 1985 by Neil and Lorraine Ashmead on the main higway leading into Nurioopta, the pride of Elderton are its old vines on deep alluvial soils on the North Para River.

Samuel Elderton Tolley established the Elderton Vineyards in the early 1900s and for most of its history was a grape supplier.

The reds range from the super-premium Command Shiraz and Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon to the Friends range sourced from local growers. The Barossa Zone red portfolio isrounded out with some Botrytis Semillon from the Riverina and some whites with some input from Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills growers.

In 2003 Elderton finished building its own winery in Nuriootpa (formerly a Penfolds site), meaning that Elderton is now able to grow, produce & bottle wines all on the family estate.

The winery is lifting the amount of quality French oak as opposed to American oak in its wines and is also aiming to achieve carbon neutrality.

The winemaker is Richard Langford.

A rare event in the drought years before the too wet 2011 and 2012 vintages, a rain swollen North Para River running by Elderton's 60 year old Cabernet vines
