The Huia is a now apparently extinct indigenous bird.

Claire and Mike Allan were drawn to Marlborough by the intense fruit flavours in the wines. They gained further winemaking experience in key Marlborough wineries, along with an extended stage in Champagne, France.

In 1996 Mike and Claire established Huia Vineyards Ltd, a small private company committed to the production of premium and classical Marlborough wines.

Wines include: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and a sparkling Methode Brut.

Huia is a fully accredited member of the NZ Sustainable Winegrower Association.

Huia Marlborough Gewurztraminer 2009

Drink: 2015

(GXY) Tasting: Apr 2014, portion barrel fermented, quite dry, glycerolly lychee and musk with spice and rose water notes, unlike the 2008 the chalky phenolics are fully ripe, balanced acidity, enough varietal character (****)

Huia Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2013

(GXY) Tasting: Apr 2014, riper style showing lime sherbet, lychee and melon with red capsicum and flint notes, creamy mid-palate and crunchy mandarin peel acidity (***1/2)

Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris 2012

Drink: 2014

(GXY) Tasting: June 2013, rich and creamy showing substantial barrel ferment textural characters,  pear and lime with brown spice, honey and nutty notes, lively mandarin-edged rind acidity on the long, dry finish, this time the phenolics are fully ripe (****)

Huia Marlborough Pinot Noir 2010

Drink: 2015

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2012, plump and medium bodied black cherry and plum with good concentration and length, some violet florals and savoury meat nuances, fine grained tannins with charry cedar/vanilla oak (***1/2)

Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris 2010

Purchased: Not ($A29)

Drink: 2013

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2012, rounded with some lanolin plumpness and barrel ferment texture, fresh pear and peach with ginger, honey and nougat notes, tangy lemon rind acidity leads to a dry finish, some slight bitterness in the phenolics is my only issue (***1/2)

Huia Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011

(GXY) Tasting: Jan 2012, their first fully certified organic grown and made wine, quite aromatic and moderately intense showing grassy passionfruit, guava and lime with some barrel ferment texture on the mid-palate, herbaceous red capsicum, snow pea finish with some flinty grapefruit rind acidity (****)

Huia Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Drink: 2011

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2011, some barrel ferment pulls back the intensity a bit, lively, grassy passionfruit, lime zest with nettle and red capsicum notes, fine chalky minerality, good line and length and finishes with penetrating grapefruit acidity (***1/2)

Huia Marlborough Gewurztraminer 2008

Drink: 2010

(GXY) Tasting: Aug 2010, very dry and lean showing lychee and rosewater and finishing with some bitter phenolics on the finish, while technically sound I continue to be perplexed as to why they persist with such an inaccessible style, perhaps it would work better with very spicy food (***)

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2009, harvested from six vineyards across Wairau Valley, vibrant and herbaceous, overlay of gooseberry, melon and various ripe tropical fruits with spicy capsicum and lemon zest acids on the finish, good intensity and length (****)

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2009, stylishly textured showing spicy pear and mandarin with ginger and honeysuckle notes, slight lanolin oil feel is counter-poised to the focussed minerally backbone, zesty finish (****)

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2009, dense and a little sturdy, black cherry and plum with violet, smoke and cinnamon aspects, savoury and medium-full bodied with well handled French oak and silky tannins (***1/2)

Drink: 2009

(G) Tasting: Mar 2008, delicate style showing musk, rosewater and lychee, soft texture with a slightly hot finish, bone dry without the Turkish delight fruit lift that can make this variety more accessible (***)

(G) Tasting: Mar 2008, spicy pear and green apple with a touch of mandarin, ginger and honeysuckle, dry with plenty of texture and well balanced grapefruit acidity and a lingering minerally finish (****)

(GXY) Tasting: Jan 2008, intense tropical fruit and gooseberry with blackcurrant nuances mid-palate also shows passionfruit, back palate shows vibrant regional expression capsicum and fresh basil features, crisp minerally acid finish (****)

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2007, soft nashi pear, white peach and mandarin flavours, smooth creamy palate shows the 40% barrel ferment with nut and white pepper features with light almond-vanilla notes on the dry finish (***1/2)

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2007, aromatic nose, extremely dry style, lychee and rose petals with subtle ginger and nutmeg spice nuances, 40% barrel ferment adds some creamy texture, too dry for my taste (***)

(GXY) Tasting: Feb 2007, mainly from Dijon clones, wild yeast ferment with white peach and stonefruit, creamy palate is a bit too dominated by toasty vanilla oak, smooth but needs brighter fruit for higher score (***)
